I only need bottle openers any more if I buy a soda at one of the latino
stores in SF's Mission district and forget to have the clerk open the
bottle for me. Even then, I can get my linesman's pliers from the truck
and use that. Boys are impressed if you put the lip of the bottle cap on a
hard edge and whack the bottle with your hand, driving the cap off, though
there is a risk of breaking the bottle[1].
I remember the bottle openers that were attached to the soft drink
coolers, the "church key" types that could also be used to punch a hole in
a can and the roughly triangular shaped ones on the ends of cork screws.
Oddly enough I got one of my scars not by opening a bottle, but attempting
to put a cap on one. We were making root beer for my son's 1st or 2nd
grade class and I was using the bottle capper where the cap is hammered on
rather than sqeezed on. The bottle shattered and I got a very nice cut on
my little finger. For a long time there wasn't much feeling in the end of
the finger, but perhaps the nerves healed themsevles over the years
because it's back to normal. The scar is faintly visible.
