My clutch cable broke on my way to work one day, and I had to drive
back about 10-15 miles without using the clutch and without stopping.
Changing gear without a clutch isn't difficult, especially when you
get a bit of practice in as I did that day, but managing to keep
moving at junctions could have been tricky.  As it happened I had no
trouble, except for one set of traffic lights set up for roadworks,
but I managed to turn right and take a detour just as I approached
them.

It helped that I had a very powerful car in those days and could slot
it into almost any gap in traffic which presented itself.
