Birdseed anecdote:  My mother was big on feeding the birds and had a
birdfeeder and a hummingbird feeder.  In 4th grade we were studying
Africa, and whatever country I was studying -- I think it was Nigeria --
ate a diet heavy on millet.  I noticed that the birdseed was mostly
millet so I planted some in my sandbox (I was too old to play in the
sandbox by then but the sandbox hadn't been removed yet.)  I watered it
regularly and pretty soon I had a lot of millet sprouts.  So I carefully
transplanted the millet sprouts into a pot and then took some more
birdseed and ground it up and baked it into something breadlike.  When
it was time for me to do my re****t I brought in my sprouted millet and
the millet-bread (which wasn't entirely inedible, but wasn't exactly
tasty; I'm not sure where I came up with the recipe.)  I got a good
grade even though I'm not sure if I really learned anything about
Nigeria.  But I can tell you this: In 1969, commercial birdseed was
mostly millet.
