I commend to your (general, not specific) attention _How to Be a (Bad)
Birdwatcher_ by Simon Barnes, a British chap. He doesn't, of course to be
a bird watcher who isn't any good at it, but a bird watcher out of the
mold of the life list birdwatchers. He wants you to notice birds and gain
enjoyment while doing so. The book gives lessonns on what to look for, and
is partly an autobiography of his interaction with them, and with his dad
who helped him get started. 

Mary's descritpions of the birds sounds as if could have been lifted from
the book.
