I got married because once I'd been with my now-husband for several
months I truly couldn't imagine any other way my life could go.  I got
married because the legal contract of marriage allows two people to
build a life together in a way that not being married -- even if you
live together for years and years -- does not; it allows far more
economic flexibility, because each of you knows that you're building
something for both of you, and if things *do* go wrong you're entitled
to your share.  I got married because I believe that standing up in
front of one another, one's family, one's friends, one's community,
and one's God, and making this degree of commitment -- including the
part about making it legally complicated and economically taxing -- to
give up, is a magical act, and that there are places one can go
emotionally as a result that one cannot go any other way.

I got married because I could not -- and cannot -- imagine any
