I think they're generally sized so that if you stare "through" them
somewhere between the other side of the page and Alpha Centauri, you go
sufficiently wall-eyed.  Corollary:  They're harder to get if enlarged
or reduced.  Notable fact: Sometimes (nay, often) in the "scan ->
tweak -> display" process, one inch on paper ends up being something
else on screen.
