There often was not a big joke to marginal stuff.  In this case, the kid
has
grabbed for the brass ring --- which should have popped out in his hand,
to
be exchanged for a free ride on the merry-go-round.  It's a just-my-luck
sort of sadsack thing.  The ring not only fail to detach, but also the kid
was yanked off his horse.
