On a more realistic note, I've long hoped that some
good engineer would make a modern design of the
Stanley Steamer.  There is a good possibility that it
could achieve efficiencies with modern engine design
at least in the range of internal combustion engines,
yet could possibly be far more fuel efficient.

Im****tantly, it is not a scalable engine, so would be
limited in use--but those limitations might be just 
right for some major applications, like town cars or
some variety of mass transit.

I didn't come up with this idea, either.  Others have
both recreated Stanley Steamer designs and speculated
that it has some big advantages over internal combustion.

But it seems that engineers are either fascinated with
the old design, or don't know enough about the old 
design to consider improvements to it.
