Humphrey Lyttelton, jazz musician and chairman of I'm Sorry I Haven't
a Clue, amongst other things, has died, aged 86.

I was to see him in concert next month, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen had
already arranged to play the gig instead as Humph had fallen ill. I
saw him last year with his band, and have seen him several times
before that. Not only a great jazz musician himself, he built a band
of talented players, and in recent years seemed to be able to conjure
up excellent young saxophone players in particular. I always enjoyed
his gigs, as I did his wry and frequently grumpy presentation of
ISIHAC, the antidote to panel games, in which he showed himself to
have a ready and sharp wit.
At his last gig I saw, he autographed a 78rpm record of one of his
'50s hits for me. I think I'll get the wind-up gramophone out and
play it in his memory.
Thank you, Humph.
