My experience was that idiots who smoked dope tended to respond
idiotically, and thoughtful people thoughtfully. Not everyone spent a
couple of hours staring at the hole in the ceiling. A few minutes,
maybe. Perhaps something similar goes on with fasting/praying. I would
think it might have a similar effect to meditation, or some other way to
get away from daily stresses and spend quiet time reflecting on things.
