I suspect they are actually aware that propane can be used as an 
alternative fuel. In an upcoming Nova episode they are hosting, and the 
topic is alternative fuels/vehicles. And despite some of their jokes, 
they aren't dummies. 

Perhaps they were surprised that it was there but that the buyer hadn't 
been informed. Or maybe they just thought they were being funny. Or they 
were killing time.
