Ask a dozen people who have done this before, and you'll get a dozen
different answers.
My answer? If you're going for less than a 50" screen, LCD has the edge.
50" or more and plasma still rules. It might as well be 1080p (or "Full
HD"), meaning that it sup****ts the highest resolution being pumped-out
these days but, if you're on a budget, you'll find some bargains that
only handle 1080i (which has to emulate that highest quality setting).
As far as manufacturers go, again, everyone's got their opinion. Howver,
a significant number of people I asked when I was looking for advice
said that Samsung is a good compromise of price and quality - they're
not the very best TVs but they're pretty good, and excellent at the
price.
I bought a Samsung 40" and am delighted with it, although it came with
its video settings on the "unbelievably garish, designed to stand out in
the showroom" settings. They needed taming to avoid retina burn.
Something else I recommend - go out and buy a couple of dead-tree "home
cinema" magazines.
