From what I know of pioneer communities in North America -- remote, 
sparsely populated -- a lot more people made their own music. Going back 
as far as medieval days in Europe, you'd also have itinerant musicians 
passing through. And the church: singing and organ music, and in bigger 
centres, patrons for some of the great composers.

But you're right, of course, that we're pretty lucky to have music from 
virtually all places and times at our fingertips.
