I belong to the Kansas City Songwriters Circle, and we hold a monthly event
at which we perform new songs written in the previous 30 days. These
events have become more popular since we started videotaping the
performances and uploading them to YouTube and Songpull.com.
On March 21, a couple of new people showed up with instruments in tow, and
they were quite good. They are part of a Maryland-based band called
"ilyAIMY" and were working their way back north and east after performing
in Austin at the SXSW music festival (Lars' favorite!). After they
performed their new songs, they mentioned that they didn't have much money
or a place to stay in KC, so could anyone put them up?
Now, I live in a one-bedroom apartment, but on the weekends I stay with
Cyndy. So, I offered to let them use my apartment for the night, had them
follow me home, gave them Cyndy's key and requested that they lock the
door
and slide the key back under it. Then Cyndy and I went back to her place.
Would you call that a crazy thing to do?
Now, I might add that, the rest of Friday evening, neither Cyndy nor I got
any "negative vibes" from these people. They each had their own WiFi
enabled laptops, so I wasn't worried about losing my home computer. And
their Saturn hatchback was so overloaded that they wouldn't have been able
to steal anything of any bulk anyway. And, yes, before we left the
apartment I loaded my new pass****t, credit cards and blank checks into a
bag and took those with us.
Saturday afternoon, I went back to the apartment, found the key in its
designated place, and everything else right where I'd left it, with a nice
thank-you note from the itinerant musicians. So, nice feeling of karma
balanced and no harm befallen.
At Easter dinner the next day, though, my family expressed surprise that I
would allow such a thing. Would you?
