A puzzle

I have a smoke alarm, three of them in fact, in the house.  When the
battery gets low it makes an irritating (intentionally no doubt) squawk
every minute or so.  A couple of nights ago while on a visit to the
bathroom one of them was doing this.  The next morning it was silent so I
didn't remember to go and get new batteries.  The same thing happened last
night and again it is now silent.  WTF?
