After he hand-searched our carry-on bag I asked a surprisingly-reasonable 
TSA employee what we should have done differently to avoid such things in 
the future.  In this case the trigger was a baggie of dried fruit.  Dense 
organic materials, apparently, are worthy of further inspection.
