Well, I had a meeting with my Imam today and we discussed
the British arm-wa****ng flap. His general conclusion is
that if the woman would rather keep her arms covered when
medical protocol requires her to bare them for wa****ng
before surgery, then she shouldn't be in the profession.
There are, according to Ali, completely different rules
for social protocol and for professional protocol. Prepping
for an operation requires one to follow professional
protocol, not social protocol.
Confirming this is a conversation I had with a woman
who is a devout practicing Muslim but who is also an
ophthalmologist. She says that socially she would never
shake hands with a man, because it is not socially
acceptable in her religion, but that she shakes hands
with her clients, whether male or female, because she
is then acting in her professional capacity, even though
it makes her uncomfortable to do so.
