From the 10-04 STARLOG's lengthy interview with veteran
director (and occasional actor) James Whitmore Jr.:

Doing HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS was "about as much fun
as you can handle," Whitmore remarks. "Kevin Sorbo is an
easygoing, workaday guy, and Rob Tapert ran a great operation.
They had two or three sets -- a castle and a village that they
would redress for different episodes of HERCULES and XENA.
They had a prop house that contained every kind of medieval
device you could possibly imagine. One of the reasons I
did the show was because it coincided with my 25th wedding
anniversary. My wife and I wanted to go to New Zealand,
and we spent three weeks there after I wrapped my episode.
"I got to work with this great actor, Bruce Campbell,
as Autolycus, the King of Thieves," Whitmore smiles.
"He's charming and funny in that episode, brilliantly
playing himself and another guy, his twin brother.
Bruce is so talented, and he's very funny. If he had been
around in the '40s, he would have been a huge movie star,
along the lines of Clark Gable. He makes a good living,
but you wish he would get that one big break that would
make him a superstar. I loved working with Bruce.
The fight scenes we did were ridiculously over the top.
They said to me, 'Jim, these are *gods* fighting!'
I said, 'Oh, OK, I'm willing to learn!'"

I've posted other excerpts of this interview on

I'm sure others can tackle transcribing his praises of
BUFFY, ANGEL, David Boreanaz, etc. etc. etc. ... ;-)
