I wouldn't want to drink from those gl*****, no. Interestingly, I have 
rarely used hotel gl***** even for cleaning my teeth. If I want a drink 
of water I tend to go straight from the bottle, which in Europe/US I 
might refill a few times from a tap with a brief rinse. If you're going 
to dispose of the bottle anyway (tut tut), it's more environmentally 
friendly not to use anything that needs wa****ng up.

I did drink water in India in some forms: never straight from a tap 
(except for cleaning teeth in nicer hotels, in cheap ones I'd even do 
that from a bottle).

In restaurants, homes, and schools in Sikkim the norm is to have "hot" 
water - its been boiled and then left to stand, winding up about bath 
temperature. Occasionally watered down with cold (never mind). Not nice 
to taste, but the local middle cl***** drink it, and I did too at 
school, as it was easier than trying to organise anything else.

Everywhere else in restaurants "filtered" water is the norm. I never 
drank it directly, but I'm pretty sure most of the fruit juice and 
lassis contained water or ice made from it. I did turn down watered 
fruit juice in Bangalore - according to the newspaper they had a major 
outbreak of gastro-enteritis (and maybe cholera?). Otherwise, I drank it 
(indirectly) almost everywhere, and was fine.

Of course all my direct water consumption was bottled. Not mineral (as 
we Europeans know it), but the supertreated tap water stuff. It tastes 
horrible, and unfortunately coke and pepsi seem to have cornered the 
market, so the profits probably all end up back in the US. You can get 
one brand of local mineral water in India - Himalaya. Also not very nice 
tasting, but better than bottled if you can find it, and only a bit more 
expensive.

I am pretty sure where I got the dysentry from and it wasn't the water. 
A restaurant that was completely empty (apart from us) at 8pm on a 
Saturday evening is definitely top of my candidate list...
