I've tracked down and been tracked down by a whole ton of people on 
facebook that I hadn't been in touch with for years (in a few cases 
decades). So for me, I migrated to it as a photo-sharing site, then 
found I like it because it's an easy way of keeping in touch - a lot 
less work than pen&ink, and somehow easier than writing emails. Facebook 
makes it particularly easy to contact old friends where you wouldn't 
know how to start the conversation out of the blue, and/or who you don't 
have an email address for. Of course, that's how they lure you in...!

The best part is that the security is fairly granular, you can control 
who sees what and you don't have to accept a friend request from anyone, 
or add any apps unless you want to.

On the other hand, yes it's somewhat addictive. I have heard of 
flirtations that get out of hand - although I don't see that there's 
anything that couldn't have happened in real life and/or (snail|e)mail.
There are some questions marks over some of the apps which say they 
won't pass on your details. Dom posted a useful link on the subject.
