Yeah.  I was only away for two weeks.  Other, more mundane stuff
kept me away from afba since I've been back.

The Africa trip was pretty hard work, not helped by the fact that
I was ill on three occasions.  A migraine on the flight there (it
was a working flight too, which didn't help), a gastric bug half
way through (ruining one of my few days off), and toothache for
the last couple of days.

We did twelve five hour flights in twelve days.  Or in nine days
if you don't include the non-flying 'down days'.

The Sahara is pretty spectacular in places, especially when viewing
from about 1000 feet up (which we did a lot).  That is, it's
spectaular when you can see it - we were there to study dust storms,
and some of them cut visibility quite drastically.

We spent 2/3 of our time in Niamey, Niger, where it was bloody
hot and extremely humid all day and all night.  The rest of the
time we were in Nouakchott, Mauritania which was much drier,
mindbuggeringly hot midday, but refre****ngly cooler at night.

Normally on our foreign trips we're based in a single country,
so even though we might fly in other countries' air space, we
land where we take off, which means there's no immigration /
emigration issues.  Not so with this trip - each flight started
and ended in different countries.  Which meant we had to fill in
sixteen immigration/emigration cards.  As a result, I now know
all my pass****t details off by heart, which is pretty sad.
