It's not the only factor - a lot of the people I know who like very 
bitter foods and smother perfectly decent bread in too much butter are 
smokers.

Altitude allegedly is another way to reduce your tastebud function, 
maybe super-tasters could try new ones at 30000 feet first?

Does age fix your texture buds as well as your taste buds? I can't bear 
being in contact with slimy aubergines, for example.
