People (myself included) who can taste the bitter compound in Brussels
Sprouts and other Brassicas are known as "super-tasters".

My mother eats sprouts, cabbage etc., so I assume she's not a
super-taster.  So when I wasa child and complained of them tasting
terrible, she probably couldn't understand why.

I suspect that many children were put in that same situation.  
Forced to eat bitter vegetables by somebody who couldn't taste it.
