I'm on Sympatico but haven't used their newsserver. I use a free
newsserver
in Poland (!) that I heard about on another newsgroup. You can read and
post with it, and it seems to be very reliable. You just have to deal with
some Polish when you sign up -- here are the instructions:

9. Now you have access to news.gazeta.pl server using your chosen
login and password.
