Neil Innes in Toronto

by Andy in TO <andy.palidwor@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 22, 2006 at 02:57 PM

Yes - it's old news now but Neil played Toronto May 10th
a good time was had by all (well, at least by me)

Neil booked a small venue in Toronto
There was virutally no pre-publicity
(I think I saw an ad the day before)

In any case, I was aware of the concert from posts on this site
and the neilinnes.org site
that site announced his Toronto concert months before
and I contacted a nice person at the St. Lawerence Centre
that said she'd warn me when tickets were going on sale.
She was true to her word and I got FRONT ROW CENTRE
and some old friends of mine got the 3 seats to the right and 2 seats
to the left

In any case - getting to the concert...
got there early.
the souvenir booth has un-'manned'
Then this nice lady comes out to sell the CDs and buttons and shirts
She says it's a brilliant CD
I say " and you're saying this because...... (pregant pause) you're
his wife?"
Sure enough she was.
We had a nice conversation.
I bought the CD and a shirt.

The concert was good
His Innes-ness started the show and the after-intermission with the 2
songs I knew he had to play
URBAN SPACEMAN and SWEET TO BE AN IDIOT
He played Bonzo material, Ruttles, A Beatles tune, The Philospher's
Song, the Ballad of Sire Robin and pretty well all of the songs from
the new CD.

This was a very 'stripped down' band.
They were travelling super-light.
Just Neil his basss player and the drummer.
and they were traveling light - an electronic upright bass and a small
drum kit.
Neil had a ukelie, an acoustic guitar, an electric and some odd
lute-type electric (for one song).
Neil also had his keyboard.

It's too bad Neil stops in Toronto so seldom
I think the last time he was here was for the Rutles Archeology
promotion (months before the CD was released in Canada).

Afterwards, Neil was very nice to sign every piece of Bonzo, Rutles
and Innes stuff we all had.
I got 4 things signed - I was like 4th or 5th in line
He was very nice and approachable.

Then - my girlfiriend and I left
and we ran into the band (JJ and Tom) as they were loading the station
wagon - they were off to London (Ontario, Canada) for a gig the next
night.
We had a nice chat with them too.
It was their first time in Canada
They wished they had some time to sight-see.
Too bad - the weather had just turned nice here too.

Next time, I hope Neil comes back in less than 9 years.

Meanwhile, I'm spending my time playing along to the "Works in
Progress" CD.
I've got all the chords down for 3 songs (my favourties)
Face Mail, End of the Line & Eye Candy
