He obviously has no idea how what he sees as safe could be dangerous
to a kid. Either that or he doesn't care. I'd vote for the latter.

Aside from the fact that dumpster diving is done by hackers and people
wi****ng to steal personal information, making a kid dumpster
dive(probably because he's too danm lazy and out of shape to do it
himself) is risking serious injury. What is thrown into dupsters?
Broken glass, metal shards, pretty much anything that could hold
potentially lethal diseases. And yeah, doing that to " contribute to
the family budget" sounds exactly what Greg would do. Instead of
getting off his arse and get a job, he uses the kid as slave labor to
do the dirty work for him.
It's also another example of how Greg obviously didn't give a damn
for the girl or her health. If he was about collecting aluminum cans,
she could have gotten cans from the trash at the mall or something,
not by dumpster diving. And for her hard work , did she get any
reward? You know, like a full dinner or even a few nice clothes at a
thriift store, maybe? Probably not.
