It's an X-Fi Platinum, so full duplex I think...

The issue seems, or seemed (as I've solved it), to be related to recording

and playing from different audio devices e.g. the USB microphone, and the 
soundcard itself.

Not sure what you mean by noiseless signal?...

As mentioned above I've got that working.

Now I'm finding that the mic is just too damn quiet, and lacking in range 
i.e. it jumps from very quiet to very loud. I've tried adjusting the
levels, 
but so far no dice. I'm going to try it on my laptop just to check whether

it's something with this PC, although I can't see why...
