I can, and have set one audio track as the mic.

If I set the other as the soundcard I get this weird distorted noise that 
gets louder and louder (not feedback).

That's what I was using originally, but bought this rather expensive 
microphone to try and improve the sound. Only I hadn't realised that USB
was 
going to be such a PITA:
