The older I get the more I realize that the im****tance, value and
veracity of lists like this continue to diminish, much like the value of
the
American Academy Awards.
In fact, the only list I really pay attention to and care about is our
Library of Congress' National Film Registry, which looks at great films
like
Blade Runner in ways in which they should be scrutinized. Enduring
artistic
merit, technological innovation, effecting social change, historical
im****tance, etc. I wonder if there is a similar registry device sponsored
by the governments in Canada, the UK, France, etc. Countries which make
or
help produce superior films should have this. Maybe the UN should have a
registry for all great films from every country. Then these lists
wouldn't
be so completely unbalanced towards U.S.- and Euro-centrism.
Bottom line, POD, is don't get too worked up over these trivial lists.
You like what you like, I like what I like, and happily our tastes (and
those of others here) probably intersect at more points along the
continuum
of film than only Blade Runner.
****, maybe we should start our own best list/film registry. I gotta
few nominations in mind.
