I guess this is the crux of the matter. I will never know for sure if I 
would've felt the same way about the film if I saw it "clean". It is the
"I 
see dead people" line that really blows the thing open, and that's in the 
trailer. Once you add that to the stylistic touches you mention, it
becomes 
fairly apparent. Maybe it wouldn't without the line. I'll never know.

As for not watching trailers... there's a whole new can of worms. I often 
try to avoid watching trailers of films I know I'm going to watch in the 
near future, but on the other hand I often deliberately seek out trailers
of 
forthcoming films that I'm anticipating eagerly. And if you're in the 
cinema, you don't have much choice but to watch trailers.

The other obvious point is that trailers perform a necessary advertising 
function. There are many films that I would not have heard of or would not

be interested in until I'd seen the trailer.
