I had a splurge on this show, made by Ridley and Tony Scott... I've
gotten hold of the complete first three series and I'm just past half
way.
And I like it, but not for the writing. If you're not in the know, the
show is about an FBI agent and his mathimatician brother. Big brother
has crimes, little brother writes equations to solve them.
For me, it is that concept that lets it down, 90% of the maths stuff is
shoehorned in rather badly. It works well for the pilot and several of
the other first series shows. I'm not sure what involvement the Scott
brothers had, but all the effort appeared to go into the designing of
the show, the characters and their relationships. And those aspects
still work very well, but some of the week to week stories have been
poor... one recently concerned Native Americans, and apart from the
maths being poorly shoehorned in, the actual outcome was rubbish,
especially the excuse the killer gave as his reason!!!??? Likewise,
maybe I've seen and read too many poor detective stories, but I've just
finished watching one about 70's anti-war protesters, and apart from the
naff way in which they find the main suspect's dead body after 30 years,
it was poor because I knew who dunnit without any clues, just by the way
his introduction was shoehorned in.
To read this you'd think that I didn't like the programme, but no, I
really do, as the characters carry it, the family and their friends and
fellow agents are good enough to support these shockingly bas stories.
And this brings me to my second point... Do these American shows suffer
for making over 20 episodes a series? I suppose that if Doctor Who and
it's 13 episode series can have one or two bad shows a run, then what
chance do the American ones have when they are filming nearly twice as
much? Surely the failure rate is much higher. I just don't think
people can come up with so many top draw story ideas in such a short
time.
One thing that I really am hoping for is a bountiful year with the fact
that while writers may well have been on strike, they would probably
have been looking at their upcoming work, and improving it while
striking. Well I would have been, lets just hope enough writers are as
work proud...

Oh people, know that you have committed great sins.
If you ask me what proof I have for these words,
I say it is because I am the punishment of God.
If you had not committed great sins,
God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.
