No it's not ideal and it is the biggest crack in the facade. However
this is no worse than the constant screw-ups with Samsung DVDs in
1999/2000. It is early days, and you have to accept that when you get
in early. The need for Java 1.1 over 1.0 is obvious, but 2.0 or BD-Live
is pointless, the only thing they can think to offer as "on-line
supplimental material" is sales material. They are never going to offer
new do***entaries on-line, so if I wanted to get a purpose built BR
drive to replace the PS3, I'd be happy with a 1.1 device.
The biggest problem, and one you missed, is region coding. HD-DVD never
had any, while Blu-Ray does, and that was going to be the killing punch
for HD, studios not wanting to show a flagrant disreguard for
international markets. In reality they don't care, if they can get none
US customers buying their product, rather than it going to some micky
mouse distributer overseas, then so be it, but they just can't show that
face in public.
So while I am more than happy with the quality of the PS3, I would buy a
multi-region player if such a thing became available.
Bottom line...I've been following this since 1999, when I was briefed by
someone at HP over blue laser technology, and it makes sense, you want
to keep the same size media, you need a finer laser, and for that you
need blue, it is a natural progression in the technology, however
To****ba wanted to look at a cheapskate alternative by staying red. If I
want a S****ts car, I buy one, yes it's expensive, but if that's what I
need, that what I have to buy. What I don't want is to buy an old
banger and stick on alloys, a spoiler and drill holes in the tail pipe.
That is what To****ba offered me, and I was just not interested.
