I'll admit that I don't watch as many recent shows as I once did, but the
only comparatively recent stuff I've seen would be Excel Saga and Azumanga
Daioh. The former I like because of its ruthless parody of so much that
has gone into anime to make it the mess that it is and Azu because it's
different and original, something that is a rarity these days. Oh, and
bearing in mind some of the comments below...

I have! A long time ago, though. As a matter of fact, I like GitS. Well, I
like SAC, anyway. It feels closer to the manga in many ways and less
westernised, something which the theatrical releases are terrible for.
