A thought on the USSD's "Black Box", and how Mason lost his body and
mind.
First, go read this http://www.ravensgarage.com/garage/maslargo.htm
because I intend to build on that a little here.
A lot of people have wondered how it is that V7-28 got into the Largo
body in the first place. Okay, maybe not a lot, maybe just me.
You'd think Mason would be careful about preventing something like
having the transfer of his consciousness corrupted by a rogue A.I.
He was outmaneuvered by V7-28 (Thanks for that one Captain Obvious!),
but the question is, "How?"
I think I've got that figured out.
To quote Jeanne Hedge's synopsis again : "Cynthia is seen standing
atop the wreckage of Aqua City, while a helicopter from Genom hovers
nearby. Mason, in the co-pilot's seat, mutters a few words into a
microphone, the helicopter pulls away, and the Knight Sabers realize
that Cynthia, too, is a Boomer! Suddenly, one of USSD's satellite
weapons fires its particle beam into Aqua City, destroying Cynthia and
sending the wreckage to the bottom of the harbor."
There is a crucial detail lacking : the Knight Sabers realize Cynthia
is a boomber because tendrils from Fredrick have fused with her body.
This means Fredrick/V7-28 now has access to the Black Box and those
codes he's been after so desperately! I don't think it's Cynthia that
fires the satellite weapon, after all, she's crying out for help at
that point. No, it's Fredrick that fires the sat beam, to put on a
show for Mason, to convince Mason that Fredrick/V7-28 is now dead.
It's V7-28 that does just enough damage to Cynthia to cease her
functioning (or does he), and leaves the Black Box unscathed so that
Mason can pick it (and the body it's in) up and incorporate it into
his Superboomer project, a project V7-28 almost surely knows of
through his intimate knowledge of Genom's computer systems and all the
data therein. It's also safe to say he knows about the OMS, it is,
after all, his goal to obtain it once he gets into the Largo body.
So, my theory goes like this :
* V7-28 gets out of the Genom network and gets himself a new body in
the form of Fredrick
* In some obscure fashion, he lets Mason know he's done this,
something that looks like a mistake in covering his tracks, or
somesuch.
* Fredrick infiltrates USSD and kidnaps (killer-doll-naps) Cynthia,
knowing full well word will quickly get back to Mason (Mason wants the
Black Box for his own project).
* Mason arrives on-scene and Fredrick sets it up to appear as though
he has been obliterated by a USSD sat strike. In fact he has accessed
the satellites through Cynthia's Black Box and written his
conciousness into her body. He lies within her body, dormant, waiting
for :
* Mason has his razordolls recover Cynthia's body so he can hopefully
salvage the Black Box
* While Mason's team is working on installing the Black Box into their
new Superboomer and/or reverse engineering it, they don't notice
Cynthia's body slip away and access the network...
And the rest is history.
Of course, this leads to the question "Why would V7-28 go about doing
it this way?"
Because, he needs Mason to get to the OMS (which I have assumed he
already knows about). We're never told what the OMS is, only that
it's powerful enough to make whoever controls it ruler of the world.
V7-28 needs unwritten knowledge (where bodies are buried, and such) to
manipulate his way to Quincy (through pawns like Kaufman and Flint) to
get the OMS, to become the Boomer Messiah and lead his kind to a new
world order.
What do you think?
