objectively, the top 5 are
persona
faithless (directed by ullmann)
clown's evening
best intentions (directed by august)
the magician
my personal favs...
devil's wanton
summer with monika
torment (directed by ?)
fanny and alexander
dreams
------
why is 'faithless' one of his, if not the, best though it was
directed by ullmann?
as great as bergman was, i think he was a bit too self-centered, self-
enclosed, and self-obsessed. every film by bergman was 100% bergman-
controlled if not exactly 100% bergman.
but, 'faithless' was layered with another level of perspective,
feeling, and thought. as such, it was more forgiving & damning and
appreciative & critical of bergman's life and creativity than the
films by bergman himself.
this may sound strange, but i'm attracted to AI for the same reason.
its double layering of kubrickian intellect and spielbergian
sentimentality made it truly sublimey.
-------
unlike bergman, antonioni's career/accomplishment was more limited.
he pretty much gave up on filmmaking after 'the passenger'. his later
stuff didn't make much impact. but, in some ways, antonioni's few
masterpieces prolly left a greater imprint on cinema than bergman cuz
antonioni, was the purer cinematic artist of the two. bergman's
movies are about people but antonioni's films are also about
exploration of film space itself.
his great mooies are no doubt..
l'avventura
la notte
eclipse
blow up
as for il grido, red desert, zabriskie point, and passenger, nothing
to sneeze at either.
my personal fav? zabriskie cuz it's so kooky. and the explosions set
to pink floyd music is truly outta this world.
